all the hype that your money can buy

Tonight at the stroke of midnight, I and about 37 other people will be stuffing ourselves into 3 vans and driving for 15 hours to Harlan, Kentucky. We'll be spending a week there working, praying, and serving.

Please pray for us, that we would be a blessing to the people there, and that we will really be a light, sharing the love of Jesus with them. Pray that we will have courage.

Our theme text for the week is Romans 12. If you have a minute, read through it and pray that we will be able to do all that stuff.

Curious trivia time:
Ratio of SWAP trip cost to Habitat for Humanity trip cost (to the same region of Kentucky):

6.6:1.0

strange. I know who I'd be more likely to sign up with.

Hope all goes well and you can be a blessing to the Kentuckians-in-need. I'd like to see someone organize a trip to provide housing to low-income families in Philadelphia or Toronto someday.

Interesting. I think that the main difference between a Habitat for Humanity trip and a Faithworks trip, is that Habitat for Humanity focuses on putting a roof over people's heads, giving them a place to live here on earth.

Faithworks/SWAP trips focus not only on providing people a safe, dry home, but there is a greater emphasis on the spiritual needs of the clients, as well as the volunteers, giving them not only an earthly home, but one in heaven that is so much better and so much more important.

I know which trip I would be more likely to sign up for.

I agree with you on the Phili/Toronto thing. I was actually talking to one of our group leaders about getting something like SWAP started in Hamilton. There is so much need right here in our backyard, why do we focus on going so far away all the time?

But does it COST that much more to address spiritual needs? I mean, I like SWAP's vision better, but why the heftier pricetag?

I just found this on the Swap web site...$345 Cdn. goes to Swap. Since we went through Faithworks, I assume that the rest went into the vehicles and food for us. I know that we raised a little extra money to but new heaters for the dorms. SWAP has a permanent ministry stationed in Kentucky, and thus needs to pay for the living expenses of several staff members. (the don't get payed very much at all, about $120 US a week.) I think $500 dollars in quite justified.

"What will it cost?

A week-long SWAP experience costs $300 U.S. / $345 Cdn. per person. This amount is divided between our program administration (food, lodging, staff, vehicles) and materials for clients who cannot afford the costs of their home repairs. We believe that for every dollar we spend on ourselves we should be prepared to spend an equal amount on those whom we seek to serve. "
